Public Programs Assistant

Under supervision of the Lick Observatory Support Astronomer/Specialist, the incumbent(s) will work individually or as part of a group in preparation for the public programs at Lick Observatory, located 23 miles southeast of San Jose at 4,200 feet elevation. Programs include the annual Music of the Sphere summer concert series comprising a musical performance, scientific talk and public viewing through the 36" and 40" telescopes, Evening with the Star series (science lectures and viewing through the telescopes), Public Evening Tours, Photography Nights, and other events throughout the year. The incumbent(s) will be responsible for greeting the public at Lick Observatory events, directing traffic and parking, as well as set-up and tear-down before and after events.

Senior Financial Analyst

Support Astronomer

Hamilton. UCO's mission is to provide UC astronomers with access to forefront optical and infrared observatories, to design and build advanced instrumentation for the Lick, Keck, and Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) Observatories, and to provide an organization that can coordinate astronomy groups throughout the UC system in support of their ground-based observing.

UC Observatories Deputy Director

The Deputy Director will report to the Director of UCO. In addition to the administrative and managerial duties of Deputy Director, the incumbent may use up to 25% of their time for research or other professional activities. Laser Spotter

For the duration of the shift incumbent will sit/stand outside, atop Mt. Hamilton, to survey the night sky for possible aircraft intrusion into laser-beam restricted zone. In the event an aircraft is spotted within the restricted zone, incumbent must push the "kill" switch to un-arm the laser beam. Responsible for safeguarding Master Key.

Gift Shop Guide

Under supervision of the Visitor Services Supervisor, the incumbent performs guide tours and gift shop attendant duties at the Mount Hamilton Observing Station Visitors Center, located about 20 miles southeast of San Jose at 4,200 feet elevation. The Visitors Center is open to the public year-round and receives approximately 30,000 visitors per year.
